CCFL Bites the Dust

Demand for CCFL has been hit hard by LCD TV backlight’s gradual conversion to LEDs. Japanese CCFL manufacturer Sanken Electric’s revenue will drop further this year as demand for CCFL dries up. The company therefore announced on March 25th after hours on the Japanese stock market, that they are ending their CCFL business.

Sanken plans to stop the production of CCFL products within this year, or by the end of March 2015 at the latest. CCFL production equipment will be scrapped thereafter. The company has already whittled down the number of units since 2009. All CCFL inventory will be discarded, apart from CCFL for lighting application as there is still demand for this area. The company plans to wait until 2015 to stop all sales of CCFL products.
